![]() ![]() ![]() That drag-the same force that makes it harder to drive against a headwind-coaxes the grains into clusters that then rapidly collapse into solidity via their own gravity, forming large chunks that glom together to make full-size planets. “It’s one of the best ways we have right now to understand how the planet formation process really gets going,” he says. The behavior of the dust, Youdin says, is akin to how cyclists in a race pack together to minimize drag. Youdin and Goodman called their proposed planet-building mechanism the “streaming instability.” Something else must be guiding the early growth of planets-but what?Ī potential answer to the mystery came about a decade ago, when astrophysicists Andrew Youdin, now at the University of Arizona, and Jeremy Goodman of Princeton University discovered whirling grains of dust dragging against gas in a disk can form the seeds of planets. But that process peters out at larger scales, where bigger objects bounce or shatter rather than sticking together when they collide. Electrostatic forces would build pebble-size clumps, similar to how dust bunnies form under a couch. ![]() But exactly how dust particles stick together had long perplexed scientists. Grains of rock and minerals in the disk somehow clump together and eventually grow into an entire world. You start with a disk of gas and dust swirling around a newborn star. ![]() ![]() ![]() Against a background of red and white Russians fighting each other, Japan propping up puppet generals and Chinese secret societies fighting themselves and the authorities, Corto and his old frenemie Rasputin are set on the trail of the gold by the Red Lanterns, an all-female Chinese gang led by the redoubtable Shanghai Lil. Set, as so many Corto Maltese tales are, at a time of conflict and in a place where cultures meet, a range of privateers, aristocrats and soldiers (some of them, including the ‘Mad Baron’, based on real-life characters) are all out to find the location of an armoured train filled with gold they believe is somewhere in Manchuria. Corto Maltese in Siberia is one of the richest, plot and character-packed stories Hugo Pratt ever produced, an exercise in restraint drawn entirely in four strip pages, with no big splash pages. ![]() ![]() ![]() Meanwhile Margaret is infuriated with Annalie's passive acceptance of what happened. For Annalie, this was meant to be a summer of new possibilities, and she resents her sister's sudden presence and insistence on drawing negative attention to their family. ![]() Especially once Margaret's own investigation begins to make members of their community uncomfortable. Instead, her sister and mother would rather move on. When their house is vandalized with a shocking racial slur, Margaret rushes home from her summer internship in New York City. Margaret looks just like their mother, while Annalie passes for white and looks like the father who abandoned them years ago, leaving their Chinese immigrant mama to raise the girls alone in their small, predominantly white Midwestern town. Seventeen-year-old Annalie is bubbly, sweet, and self-conscious, whereas nineteen-year-old Margaret is sharp and assertive. The Flanagan sisters are as different as they come.
